Iran Releases Captured U.S. Navy Crew Members – Update

Iran’s Swift Release of U.S. Sailors Hailed as a Sign of Warmer Relations as a follow up to yesterday’s post about US Navy boats in Iranian custody.

TEHRAN — Iran’s release of 10 United States Navy sailors on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after they were detained on the Persian Gulf, is being hailed in both countries as a sign that their relations have evolved since the signing of the nuclear accord last summer.

A senior defense official, speaking in Washington, said the sailors were not harmed but would undergo medical evaluation and a debriefing in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar. Meanwhile, their vessels were taken by another American crew to Bahrain, their original destination and home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
